The Kindest Wish Granter

His Holiness Sadguru Shree Mama (“Mama”) was so generous that he would always grant some wish or desire to every person he met, be it wealth, knowledge, or guidance on the path of spirituality. Mama would give these gifts with an open heart and yet stay detached from them at the same time. It is important to note that His way of granting wishes was solely based on the desires of the person or people.

One day, in April of 1983, Mama was visiting the city of Karad in the southern part of Maharashtra state,  India. As luck would have it, I happened to visit the same venue for a wedding. When I went to get an audience with Him in the evening, He asked me to come again the next day. The next day when my wife and I bowed down to Him, He immediately said, “ I will soon come to your place to give you some work.” I started thinking to myself, “What work might Mama ask me to do?”

Earlier in February, Mama was at a town called Kale, located in Maharashtra. Each sadhak who met Him at that time wished that Mama would grace their home with a visit. They understood that given the number of people present, visiting each and everyone could be very taxing on Mama’s time and schedule, and also, from a logistical standpoint, Mama couldn’t possibly visit everyone present; hence, the sadhaks hesitated to express such a desire. But Mama knew about their dilemma and told me the next day that He would like to visit each sadhak’s home. “After all the visits are done, we will commence the pre-scheduled program in the amount of time that is left,” He said. Everyone was very happy that Mama was granting them their wish. I, myself, was overwhelmed with joy for the simple reason that Mama asked me to accompany Him. When going to visit the sadhaks’ homes, Mama put His hands on my shoulder and said, “Let me put some weight on your shoulders. Let me walk a few steps in your company.” I did not understand the meaning of this but felt joyous for sure.

Seeing that Mama trusted me and was letting me accompany him, one sadhak approached me with a request. He said, “Since you are so close to Mama, can you please ask Him to conduct today’s discourse on the topic of how one should search for the right Sadguru?” I respectfully declined and requested him to ask the question himself. When Mama was requested to come to the podium to start the discourse, He paused for a bit and then said to everyone, “Today some of the sadhaks wish that I answer their questions about how to search for a Sadguru. But we have a head-master amongst us, who I suggest, should take up the task.” Then he pointed to me and asked me to go ahead with answering their questions. I was shocked and quite taken aback, but could not disobey Mama. To make matters worse, He reminded me that the session was to last a whole hour! Unable to wiggle out of this situation, I bowed down to Mama to request his blessings, gathered my courage and started the talk. After an hour, Mama presented the summation in just one sentence. He said, “Even a Sadguru is in search of a disciple who is worthy and deserving of everything the Sadguru can give.” I realized later that it was an answer to the earlier question a sadhak had asked of me. He had received his answer and Mama gave it to him without getting directly involved.

Later in May, after the incidence in Karad, Mama said to me, “I have come to assign you some work. You must take me on your motorcycle to wherever I ask.” And so, we went to Kagal that day. Kagal is a town in Kolhapur, a district of Maharashtra. A sadhak was patiently waiting for Mama there. Other sadhaks, who were not expecting a visit from Mama, were very happy to see Him as well but felt rushed at the same time since they couldn’t arrange for as much of a proper welcome for Mama as they would have liked. Mama said to them, “You all wanted me to visit you, so I came in the evening.” To this, one of the sadhaks said, “Mama, if it were morning, we would have gotten to offer puja at your feet and arrange some other programs. Please give us such an opportunity.” To this Mama replied, “You are expressing this wish just now! Earlier you wished for me to visit you, which is fulfilled. That is all for now.” When we returned from Kagal, Mama said to me, “Tomorrow is your rest day. We will go to Hebbal (a town in the state of Karnataka) the day after.”

Accordingly, we went to Hebbal. It had been my wish to visit Hebbal for almost 45 years, which now Mama fulfilled. There was a sadhak in Hebbal who had an ‘audumbar’ tree as well as P. P. Shreeguru’s paduka in his courtyard. “This sadhak always wished that I visit this place once, so I came,” said Mama. During that trip, we visited many people with similar desires in their hearts. Such was Mama’s nature, generous beyond measure, willing to give any person anything they wished for. I felt very fortunate to accompany Him on these trips, just like the soil that gets the fragrance of the flowers just because of its proximity to them.
