When Geeta got off the auto-rickshaw along with her sister, the onlookers were horrified to see her condition. She was screaming and cursing, her body was uncontrollably jerking as if it were getting hit from everywhere. She barely managed to enter the hospital even with her sister’s help. It was as if an evil spirit had possessed her. In a fleeting moment of sanity, the last few days flashed before her eyes.
It started very subtly, as an occasional fit of rage triggered by unpleasant memories of the past, and then escalated to her becoming hysterical at the slightest provocation. At first, she sought her family doctor’s advice. But her symptoms kept getting worse. Worried, her husband decided to seek a specialist’s help in Pune, but unfortunately, that didn’t help either. For the first time, they realized that this was not a medical problem. They weren’t sure what to do.
Finally, Kusum, her sister, suggested, “This has gone too far. Now we have only one resort – Sadguru Mama.” Mama was hospitalized at that time. Nonetheless, He responded to Kusum’s request and suggested a meeting at the hospital. As the day approached, Geeta’s condition worsened rapidly. A voice rang in her mind continuously: “No matter where you go, you are going to die. The day of your death has been fixed. You can’t escape.” The voice became steadily stronger. Here was the day. And here she was.
Holding Geeta with great efforts, Kusum entered Sadguru Mama’s room. The moment Sadguru Mama cast His eyes upon her, Geeta’s screams reached a new height. “Here they come! They are attacking me! No! Please no!” She was impossible to control. It was a horrific sight. Sadguru Mama, however, as calm as ever, said, “Geeta, relax. Nothing is going to happen. Just lie down and start chanting the name of God. Better still, you lie down, and let me do the chanting.” Geeta refused to listen. She even tried to flee the room! Suddenly, some unseen power intervened and stopped her in her tracks. She then lay down. Sadguru Mama continued His chanting. Two, perhaps three hours passed. Geeta slowly calmed down. After months of torture, she finally felt at peace again.
Mama then looked at her and said, “It’s over. Whatever was after you, didn’t dare enter this room. And now, it has gone away for good.” He gave her some water with holy ash to drink and said “Now listen carefully because it’s time that you also changed yourself. You have faith. But are you humble and considerate? Do you know how many people you have hurt with your behavior? Have you ever read Das-Bodh (a 17th-century spiritual text, narrated by Saint Samarth Ramdas Swami to his disciple, Kalyan Swami)? If not, go read it. There is a chapter that describes the attributes of a fool.” Pausing a bit, He continued, “This is not done, Geeta. You must change. Be nice to everyone. Don’t miss out on sadhana. The Shakti will take care of you.”
Geeta was in a flood of tears. As she touched His feet, He reminded her, “Your husband must be worried. Don’t forget to write to him. Tell him all is well.” As she left the hospital, she was already feeling the change.
Was it all a bad dream? Was she really possessed by evil power? And how come Sadguru Mama was so calm despite her horrific condition? Perhaps it didn’t matter! What mattered was that slowly, with regular sadhana, Geeta’s life was back on track. When she read the chapter in Das-Bodh, it was like looking in a mirror and making her realize the error of her ways. She then wrote to Sadguru Mama, admitting her mistakes. The ever kind Sadguru Mama wrote back, with words of encouragement. His words and regular sadhana became Geeta’s life support, forever.

यदा गीता रिक्शावाहनात् अवारोहत् तदा मार्गस्थाः तस्याः दशां वीक्ष्य सर्वथा भयाकुलाः आसन् | सा निन्दन्ती गर्हयन्ती च आसीत् | ननु केनचित् सर्वतः आहतः इव तस्याः देहः अनियन्त्रितं कम्पं प्राप्तः आसीत् | सा कथञ्चित् भगिन्याः आधारेण रुग्णालये प्रवेशं कर्तुमपारयत् | नूनं कोऽपि दुष्टः पिशाचः इव तां निगृहीतवान् आसीत् | देहभानक्षणे तस्याः जीवनस्य अन्तिमाः दिवसाः तया पुरतः दृष्टाः|
तत् सर्वम् अतिसूक्ष्मतया प्रारब्धम् | यथा प्राक्तनदुःखदस्मृतिभिः उद्युक्तः प्रासङ्गिकः क्रोधः, ततश्च तत् इयद् वृद्धं यत् सा लवमात्रादपि प्रेरणात् अत्यन्तमाविष्टा भवति स्म | प्रथमं सा उपचारार्थं स्वकुटुम्बवैद्यं प्रति गतवती | किन्तु तस्याः लक्षणानि सततम् अशोभनतराणि अभवन् | चिन्ताग्रस्तः तस्याः पतिः पुण्यपत्तने विशेषतज्ज्ञमपि अमिलत् परन्तु दुर्दैववशात् तेनापि न कोऽपि लाभः अभवत् | तदा ताभ्यां ज्ञातं यदेषा औषधोपचारसम्बन्धिनी समस्या नास्ति | अतः तौ किंकर्तव्यमूढौ जातौ | अन्ततः तस्याः भगिनी कुसुम अवदत्, “इदं सर्वम् अस्मत्प्रयत्नेभ्यः परं गतमस्ति | इदानीमेक एव आश्रयोऽस्ति – सद्गुरुः मामा |” तदानीं मामामहाराजाः रुग्णालयबद्धाः आसन् | तथापि तैः कुसुमायाः प्रार्थना स्वीकृता तथा च रुग्णालये एव मिलनं निश्चितम् | यथा स दिवसः समागतः तथा गीतायाः अवस्था वेगेन असम्यक्तरा अभवत् | कश्चिद् ध्वनिः तस्याः चित्ते अविरतम् अनदत्, “यत्र कुत्रापि गच्छ, अद्य त्वम् अवश्यं मरिष्यसि | तव मरणस्य दिवसः निश्चितः अस्ति | तत्परिहर्तुं न ते सामर्थ्यम् |” स ध्वनिः बलवत्तरः अभवत् | स एवायं दिवसः| इहैव च सा आसीत् |
अतिप्रयासेन गीतां धारयन्ती कुसुम कथञ्चित् सद्गरुमामामहाराजाणां कोष्ठं प्राविशत् | यस्मिन् क्षणे सद्गुरुमामामहाराजाः तेषां दृष्टिं तस्याम् अदधुः, गीतायाः आक्रोशाः अतिदीर्घाः अजायन्त | “इमे ते अत्र आगताः ! ते माम् आक्रामन्ति ! हा हन्त ! नैव नैव !” तस्याः नियन्त्रणम् असम्भवमासीत् | अतीव घोरं तद् दृश्यम् | सद्गुरुमामामहाराजाः तु पूर्ववत् शान्ताः एव आसन् | ते अवदन्, “गीते, समाश्वसिहि | किमपि न भविष्यति | केवलं भूमौ उपविश तथा ईश्वरस्य नामानि जप | अथवा त्वं संविश, अहमेव जपं करोमि |” गीता किमपि नाशृणोत् | सा तु कोष्ठाद् बहिः पलायितुमपि अयतत ! अकस्मात्, काचन अदृश्या शक्तिः माध्यस्थ्यं कृत्वा ताम् अवारुणत् | ततः सा भूमौ समविशत् | सद्गुरुमामामहाराजाः जपं कुर्वन्तः एव आसन् | द्वे अथवा तिस्रः होराः अतीताः| गीता शनैः शान्ताऽभवत् | बहुमासानां त्रासात् पश्चात् सा पुनः शान्तिमध्यगच्छत् |
ततः मामामहाराजाः तां पश्यन्तः अवदन्, “तत् समाप्तम् | यत् किमपि त्वामनुसरत् आसीत् तत् इमं कोष्ठं प्रवेष्टुं न अशक्नोत् | अधुना च तत् निर्गतं शुभाय |” ते तस्यै भस्ममिश्रितं जलं पातुम् अयच्छन् अवदन् च, “अधुना सावधानं शृणु यतः अयं तव आत्मपरिवर्तनस्य समयः अस्ति | तव समीपे श्रद्धा अस्ति | किन्तु किं त्वं नम्रा कारुण्यपूर्णा च असि ? किं त्वं जानासि त्वया निजाचरणेन कति मनुष्याः आहताः? त्वया दासबोधः (सप्तदशशतके समर्थरामदासस्वामिना स्वशिष्याय कल्याणस्वामिने कथितः ग्रन्थः) पठितोऽस्ति किम्? यदि नैव, तर्हि तं पठ | तत्र मूर्खलक्षणवर्णनपरः एकः अध्यायः अस्ति |” क्षणं विरम्य ते पुनरवदन्, “इदं न योग्यं गीते | त्वया आत्मनि परिवर्तनं करणीयमेव | सर्वैः सह शोभनतया व्यवहर | साधनां मा परिहर | सा शक्तिः तव रक्षां करिष्यति |” गीता अश्रुपूर्णमुखी आसीत् | यथा सा तेषां चरणौ अस्पृशत् तथा ते ताम् अस्मारयन्, “तव पतिः चिन्ताकुलः स्यात् | तस्मै पत्रं लिखितुं मा विस्मर | कथय तस्मै सर्वं शोभनमस्तीति |” यदा सा रुग्णालयात् निरक्रामत् तदा आत्मनि सम्भवत् परिवर्तनं भावितवती |
किं तत् सर्वं दुःस्वप्नमासीत्? किं सत्यमेव सा कयाचित् दुष्टशक्त्या गृहीता आसीत्? कथं च तस्याः घोरावस्थायां सत्यामपि सद्गुरुमामामहाराजाः अत्यन्तं शान्ताः आसन् ? ननु एतेन सर्वेण किं प्रयोजनम् ! इदं महत्त्वपूर्णं यत् नित्यसाधनया गीतायाः जीवनं पुनः पूर्वपदं प्राप्तम् | यदा सा दासबोधान्तर्गतम् अध्यायं पठितवती तदा तत् दर्पणवत् तस्यै तस्याः अयोग्याचरणम् अदर्शयत् | ततः सा मामामहाराजान् लिखित्वा आत्मनः अपराधान् स्वीकृतवती | नित्यकरुणामयः सद्गुरुः तां प्रोत्साहनपरं पत्रं प्रेषितवान् | तस्य शब्दाः तथा नित्या साधना इति एव गीतायाः शाश्वतः जीवनाधारः अभवत् |
