The snow capped peaks of the Himalayan mountain range, the cool breezes, deep valleys, hot water springs and precarious horseback rides – all of these naturally fill the heart of any pilgrim with awe and thrill. Mr. Agharkar had a great desire to visit the holy places of Shree Badrinath and Shree Kedarnath*, situated in the Himalayas.

Finally, in 1989, he set off with a group of pilgrims to fulfill his dream. Mr. Agharkar was a disciple of H. H. Sadguru Shree Mama (“Mama”). His fellow travellers however, were not. As they set off from Gaurikund to Kedarnath**, the impressive sight of the Himalayas moved Mr. Agharkar. He missed Mama there. “I wish this was not a mere tour but a Bhakti-yatra (pilgrimage) with Mama instead” he thought to himself. “It would indeed be an altogether different experience if only Mama were here”.

Hands bowed, with a prayer on his lips, his heart full of longing for a glimpse of Mama, Mr. Agharkar trekked on. A short journey took him to his destination – the holy Kedarnath temple. It had snowed recently and thick snow had piled up around the temple. Mr. Agharkar went inside the temple to perform pooja and, somehow, sensed the divine presence of Mama there. After praying to Lord Shiva (Kedarnath, as that deity is known), he stepped out of the temple and suddenly someone patted him on his shoulder.

He turned around and  was shocked to see that it was none other than Mama! Dressed in a sovala (a silk, draped cloth worn during pooja), the sacred thread called janva around His neck, a pali and panchapatra (a small cup and spoon like vessels used during pooja) in His hand, Mama smiled warmly at Mr. Agharkar.

“So, did you go see the deity?” asked Mama. “Yes, I did,” replied the amazed man. He could not take his eyes off the radiant form of Mama. He was overcome with Mama’s presence, and tears compensated for his loss of words. ”Okay then,” said Mama with a loving smile and soon disappeared. 

As Mr. Agharkar gathered his wits, he realised that no one else from his group had seen Mama. It was only he who had been blessed with the divine vision and presence of Mama. This, in fact, is what is called ‘darshan’.. A few days later, enquiries revealed that on that particular date, Mama was actually in Pune or Mumbai, but definitely not anywhere in the Himalayas!

Mr. Agharkar had often read in the holy book, Shree Gurucharitra, that Lord Dattatreya can appear in multiple places at the same time. “No wonder then, that Mama, considered an incarnation of Lord Dattatreya Himself, could also manifest himself in many places simultaneously”  thought Mr. Agharkar.

Indeed, the Lord and Sadguru are known to appear before anyone who truly and earnestly seek their darshan!  

*Badrinath is an ancient temple devoted to Lord Vishnu and Kedarnath, equally ancient, is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The deities and temple towns have the same name. Situated in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan ranges, the Kedarnath temple is believed to have been built more than 5,000 years ago by the Pandavas.

**Gaurikund is a pilgrimage site famous for its natural hot water springs. It serves as a base camp for the trek to Kedarnath temple. The temple can be reached by a 9.9 mile uphill trek on horseback from Gaurikund.

सद्गुरो अहमनुसन्द‍धे भवन्तम्

हिमालयपर्वतस्य हिमाच्छादितानि शिखराणि त‍त्रत्यः शीतलः वायुः, गम्भीराः दर्यः, उष्णजलनिर्झरिण्यः त‍था अश्वयानानि इतीदं सर्वमपि श्रुत्वा एव यस्य कस्यापि यात्रिकस्य हृदयम् उत्साहेन रोमहर्षेण च पूर्णं भवति | श्री.आघारकरमहोदयस्य मनसि महती कामना आसीत् श्रीबदरीनाथकेदारनाथदर्शनं कर्तुम् |

अन्त‍तः १९८९ ख्रिस्ताब्दे सः यात्रिकसमूहेन सह दर्शनार्थं प्रस्थितः| आघारकरमहोदयः परमपूज्यसद्गुरुमामामहाराजाणां शिष्यः आसीत् | अन्ये यात्रिकाः तु न शिष्याः आसन् | यदा ते सर्वे गौरीकुण्डतः केदारनाथं प्रति प्रस्थिताः तदा भव्यं पर्वताधिराजहिमालयं दृष्ट्वा आघारकरमहोदयः विह्वलः अभवत् | सः मामामहोदयानां न्यूनतां दृढम् अबोधत | सः अचिन्तयत्, “अहं प्रबलं कामये यत् इयं साधारणी यात्रा न स्यात् किन्तु मामामहाराजसहिता भक्तियात्रा स्यात् | यदि केवलं मामा अत्र अभविष्यत् तर्हि एषः सर्वथा भिन्नः अनुभवः अभविष्यत् |” तस्य करौ अञ्जलिबद्धौ मुखे प्रार्थना, हृदयं मामादर्शनव्याकुलम् | आघारकरमहोदयः अग्रे अचलत् | लघुप्रवासेनैव सः गन्तव्यस्थानं श्रीकेदारनाथपावनमन्दिरं प्राप्तः| किञ्चित् पूर्वमेव हिमवर्षा जाता आसीत् अतः मन्दिरस्य परितः घनहिमस्य राशिः आसीत् | आघारकरमहोदयः पूजां कर्तुं मन्दिरस्य अन्तरे गतः तदा कथञ्चित् सः मामामहोदयानां दिव्यास्तित्वं समवेत् (समवेत् – सम्+विद् = sensed) | भगवन्तं शिवं केदारनाथं सम्प्रार्थ्य सः मन्दिरात् बहिः आगतः| तदा एव कश्चित् अकस्मात् तं स्कन्धे अस्पृशत् |

सः परिवृत्य अपश्यत् मामामहोदयं पुरतः साक्षात्कृत्य च सर्वथा विस्मितः अभवत् | शुद्ध‍धौतवस्त्रावृतः ग्रीवायां मौञ्जीधारी हस्ते पञ्चपात्रादिसामग्रीधारी मामामहोदयः आघारकरमहोदयं पश्यन् प्रेम्णा अस्मयत् |

“तर्हि देवदर्शनं लब्धं त्वया?” मामामहोदयः अपृच्छत् | “आमाम्” इति उत्तरं दत्तवान् स चकितः एव | सः मामामहोदयानां दिव्यतेजोमयरूपात् नेत्रद्वयं दूरीकर्तुं न अशक्नोत् | मामामहोदयानाम् उपस्थित्या व्याकुलः वक्तुम् अशक्तः साश्रुमुखः अभवत् | “तर्हि कुशलम्” इत्युक्त्वा मामामहाभागाः स‍स्नेहस्मितं कृत्वा कुत्रापि अन्तर्हिताः अभवन् |

आघारकरमहोदयः यथा समाश्वस्तः अभवत् त‍था ज्ञातवान् यत् तस्य समूहे केनापि अन्येन मामामहोदयाः न दृष्टाः आसन् | सः एकः एव भाग्यवान् येन मामामहोदयानां दिव्यदर्शनं साक्षात्कृतम् | इदमेव वस्तुतः “दर्शनम्” इति उच्यते | किञ्चिद्दिनान‍न्तरं ज्ञातं यत् मामामहोदयाः तस्मिन् दिनाङ्के पुण्यपत्तने वा मुम्बईनगरे वा आसन् न खलु हिमालये |

आघारकरमहोदयेन श्रीगुरुचरित्रग्रन्थे बहुधा पठितमासीत् यत् भगवान् दत्तात्रेयः एकस्मिन्नेव क्षणे बहुषु स्थानेषु उपस्थातुं शक्नोति इति | आघारकरमहोदयः अचिन्तयत्, “तर्हि नास्ति किमपि आश्चर्यं यत् मामामहोदयाः साक्षात् दत्तात्रेयप्रभोः अवतार‍रूपाः समकाले एव बहुस्थानेषु प्रकटितुं समर्थाः इति |” नूनं यः कोऽपि अन्तःकरणेन तद्दर्शनं कामयते तस्य पुरतः आविर्भवत्येव श्रीभगवान् त‍था श्रीसद्गुरुदेवः| 

* बदरीनाथ – भगवतः विष्णोः पुरातनं देवालयं विद्यते | त‍थैव केदारनाथ इति भगवतः शङ्करस्य पुराणं देवालयमस्ति | एतयोः देवतयोः त‍त्स्थानयोश्च समाने एव नामनी स्तः| भारतस्य उत्तराखण्डराज्ये हिमालयपर्वतेषु स्थितं केदारनाथमन्दिरं पञ्चाशत्सहस्रवर्षेभ्यः पूर्वं पाण्डवैः निर्मितमस्तीति उच्यते |

** गौरीकुण्ड – इदं तीर्थक्षेत्रं त‍त्रस्थानां नैसर्गिकाणाम् उष्णनिर्झराणां कृते प्रसिद्धम् अस्ति | केदारनाथमन्दिरारोहणात् पूर्वं तलशिबिर‍रूपेण इदं स्थानम् उपयुक्तं वर्त‍ते | गौरीकुण्डात् अश्वपृष्ठेण ९.९ मैलमात्रप्रवासेण मन्दिरं गन्तुं शक्यते |
